Beam Power Pentode
The General Electric J.A.N ( Joint Army Navy ) 6V6GTY Vacuum tube is a glass octal type
used as output amplifiers
in automobile, battery-operated, and other receivers in
which reduced plate-current drain is desirable. It
requires an octal socket and may be mounted in any
position. It is equivalent in performance to type 6AQ5.
The GTY suffix indicates a "low loss" micanol base, which is brown. All the -Y suffixes indicate that.
Even though the "Y" stands for "yellow," a 6V6GTY is a brown base, and a 5U4GYB is also a brown base,
etc.
As for ratings in watts, this is more complicated. It is true that GTA's are rated at 14 watts, but this is
because of a change in the way that tubes were rated when the GTA was created (moving from a design center
rating to a design maximum rating), not in the performance of the tube. The long story short is that 6V6G's,
6V6GT's, 6V6GTY's, and 6V6GTA's are all rated at 12W design center and 14W design maximum. They are all
electrically the same. You will not notice the power difference. Sound - possibly - but usually the preamp
tubes will make more difference.
